Talks, Video, Public writing...
I'm gathering more accessible bits and pieces of my work here.
Upcoming Talks
Presenting a talk at UNB's Research Institute in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (RIDSAI) Symposium titled: "AI in HR Tech: Responsible innovation and competitive dynamics, a case study navigating market demands for fraud detection". I argue that a hype-driven market for AI capabilities can create something very much like Akerlof's market for lemons, where information asymmetry leads to adverse selection. This suggests a new line of thinking about policy to support responsible innovation.
I'll be giving a talk on AI and Public Health in March as part of the Western Centre for Public Health and Family Medicine Seminar Series.
Writing
Some of my research on influence and manipulation in social media has been relevant to the US policy debate on TikTok. I recently wrote a short piece for The Conversation: the American TikTok deal doesn't address the platform's potential for manipulation, only who profits
During the January 2025 Canadian federal election campaign, I wrote about the role of social media platforms in shaping political discourse.
Here's the piece: the risks of misinformation during the 2025 Canadian election
And some related audio:
A discussion on how to recognize and understand election misinformation and disinformation
A podcast episode on how to separate what's real from what's not
I have a retrospective in progress "The Disinformation Election That Wasn't?" which I'll post soon
Video
A video of a recent talk I gave about living with AI.
I've also explored some of the same ideas in a brief article: "What humans soon can't do?"
